Pelvic floor physical therapy isn’t only for pregnant or postpartum patients. Benefits have been seen for male, female and even nulliparous – never given birth – individuals for a wide range of conditions. Everyone has a pelvic floor. It’s critical that we understand when an issue could contribute to or stem from it. What’s an obstacle that you hope future women in health care never have to face? I hope women in health care never have to choose between their babies and professional development. Whether maternity leave, promotion, training opportunities or adequate time to pump without recourse, I’ve heard many horror stories as an Army Reserve officer and mom. I’ve witnessed evolution of policies to better support young parents, but, unfortunately, it is not universal. TIANI BRADFORD What’s your favorite way to recharge or prevent burnout? I exercise and prioritizing eating well. I’ve found a gym community that provides structured workouts, good friends, a good amount of sweat and my worries are left at the door. I wake earlier and go to bed earlier to make it happen, but budgeting my time makes all the difference. Planning quality food into my day gives me the stamina to work out and refuel so I can show up with energy for my patients, family and friends. If you could give one piece of advice to your patients, what would it be? Keep moving. Find some form of movement you love and keep doing it. Physical movement is important but moving through life with intent changes everything. Living well comes when you live life on purpose. Those who chose to move and improve in life heal better than those who have life just happening to them. There is far too much to see and do in this world to sit on the couch all day. If you feel you’re already constantly on the go and don’t feel you’re living well, try a different approach. Purposeful, active people live well. Photo by Jenn Cady.
