If you’ve only heard about the Wellness Center but never given it a try, it’s never too late to come and see what your body has been missing. “The MUSC Wellness Center really is, as we say, a ‘one-stopshop’ for fitness and wellness needs in the Charleston community,” said Marketing Director Colby Denton. “The massive facility is the perfect location to work out, whether you’re a local or a visitor, and we truly have something for everyone.” For example, if you need a swim to beat the summer heat, the Wellness Center has a 25-meter indoor pool to help you stay doubly cool during a fun workout. After exercising, relax in the wet or dry sauna. And if you’re not sure about the best way to begin a new fitness program, the Wellness Center staff will guide you through several options, such as personal training, group exercise classes, a rooftop gym, intramural sports and adult organized sports leagues. “Our talented staff is another massive benefit for using the Wellness Center,” Denton said. “We have one of the most educated groups of employees in a facility of this nature. And several of our personal trainers have earned various awards and certifications and are consistently busy with clients, including local and national celebrities.” If you still need more convincing, consider that in addition to regular fitness, the Wellness Center offers amenities that include: • Two group exercise studios; • A cycling studio; • A boxing studio; • Indoor and outdoor rooftop running tracks; • A multipurpose gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer; • Courts for racquetball, squash, tennis and pickleball. “There are little to no facilities in town that offer the same number of amenities as the Wellness Center,” Denton said. “There are very few squash courts in town, and we have two. People also come here because of the social environment the Wellness Center creates.” If you aren’t as healthy as you’d like to be, part of the Wellness Center’s social environment is designed especially for you to get your vigor back on track. One recently-established program was created specifically for both during and after pregnancy. “The Prenatal/Postpartum Wellness program is one of our newest and designed to enhance healing from carrying a baby, diastasis, after-birth pelvic floor issues and much more,” Denton said. “We’re also working on a program centered around prostate cancer survivors as well as collaborating with Lantana Recovery Rehab to teach participants healthy lifestyle skills through fitness and recreation opportunities.” So come to the Wellness Center and get fit, clear the mind, learn a new game and maybe make a new friend. The only thing you’ll have to ponder at the end is why you didn’t do it sooner. FOCUSING ON FITNESS AT THE MUSC WELLNESS CENTER By L. C.
