Thatcher, who hailed from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, before moving to Charleston in 2006, has a rich baritone voice that has most people asking him, “Do you sing? Have you ever considered doing radio work?” Definitely no and definitely yes would be his responses. “The whole team at HealthLinks is incredibly excited to have D.J. Thatcher as our new HealthLinks Podcast host,” said Publisher Cullen Murray-Kemp. “D.J. has a portfolio of professional experiences and skills that enable him to ask insightful questions while staying engaged with our guests on HealthLinks Podcast.” Thatcher follows HealthLinks podcast host Torry Seward, who brought health care experts, health tips and heroic stories of survival to listeners for the past year. Thatcher brings a new element to the HealthLinks podcast – a video component known as vcast. “Vcasts enable us to see guests, watch videos and see photos of devices and procedures,” Thatcher said. His experience with an American Medical Association news reporting program gave him his earliest training in radio and broadcast work. Thatcher had a brief stint reporting news and traffic for TV and radio stations and worked his way up the ranks with Dale Carnegie, a personal and professional development company, to become a global master trainer. His voice, his radio experience and leadership training are only part of the expertise that he brings to the HealthLinks podcast. His own career in the health care profession gives him a level of understanding and compassion that few other local podcast hosts can offer. “At 16, as a high school student, I was a volunteer EMT; at 18, I was a paramedic and graduated from college at age 23 as a registered nurse,” Thatcher explained. “I specialized in emergency, trauma and critical care, and I also served for two years as the assistant chief nursing officer at a medical center.” It is not surprising that Thatcher has a dogged passion for serving other people. “Five to six days a month, I still work on a 911 paramedic unit for Charleston County,” Thatcher said. “I feel a sense of joy and duty to help others. With the leadership training I conduct, and through the podcast, I love helping people become a better version of themselves.” Thatcher and his wife, Allyson, a local doctor, share their empty nest with two dogs, Bailey and Chance. Their grown children have an array of careers that are proof that the apples don’t fall far from the tree. Their son, Michael, does character voices and is an actor on Broadway; daughter, Olivia, teaches AP history at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant; Andrew is a firefighter-paramedic for the city of Charleston; and their youngest son, Joseph, is a sous-chef at Millers All Day in Charleston.
