For this reason, Trident is considering plans for new facilities throughout the Lowcountry. “Trident’s goal is to be a good neighbor to the residents and businesses that call the Lowcountry home,” said Christina Oh, Trident Health’s president and CEO. Last year, more than 150,000 Lowcountry residents received emergency care at a Trident Health facility. In addition to 321-bed Trident Medical Center and 124-bed Summerville Medical Center, Trident Health includes three free-standing emergency departments: Brighton Park Emergency, Centre Pointe Emergency and Moncks Corner Emergency. In April 2022, it broke ground on its fourth free-standing ER on James Island. Located on the site of the former Burger King on Folly Road, the new ER aims to meet the needs of the growing number of workers, families and retirees who call James Island home. Trident’s expansion also includes a new 60-bed free-standing behavioral health hospital. When completed in the Spring of 2023, it will be the first of its kind in South Carolina in 30 years. In addition, Trident has plans for a facility on Johns Island. Trident Health’s new facilities and expansions create an opportunity for residents and organizations to start a conversation about what’s needed in the area and the various ways in which these important efforts can be supported. Trident Health recognizes that working with other providers through partnerships and affiliations creates a more user-friendly experience that can also lead to better care and improved outcomes. For more than a decade, Trident Health has worked with the Fetter Health Care Network, a federally funded health center with an active presence on Johns Island. Together, Trident Health and Fetter have enhanced accessibility in the Lowcountry through various programs. The Summerville Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, for example, is aimed at bringing quality care to area residents. As studies have shown, many doctors choose to set up their practice and remain permanently where they were trained.
