The hospital, an Encompass Health affiliate, was presented with the President's Circle Award in September. Proud, grateful and honored are the best adjectives to describe how the rehabilitation hospital’s chief executive officer, Rick Hundorfean, feels these days. “When I brought the President’s Circle Award home, I wrapped it in towels for protection,” Hundorfean said. “I’m so proud to bring this award to our hospital and to celebrate the achievements of our wonderful staff.” “It’s not my name on the award; it is the hospital’s name, which is exactly how it should be,” he added. “Our team is caring, compassionate and dedicated to seeing our patients and each other succeed. I trust them and our patients trust them.” On Wednesday, Sept. 29, employees enjoyed a day filled with surprises to celebrate the news. A huge “Congratulations” banner adorned the lawn, and a custom balloon archway welcomed everyone to the cafeteria, where the staff enjoyed a delicious spread from Lewis Barbecue. The President’s Circle Award recognizes high scores on metrics such as growth, discharge destinations, patient satisfaction and employee engagement and retention. It is one of six awards Encompass Health presents each year. The other five are Outstanding Performance, Patient Satisfaction, Clinical Excellence, Marketing Team of the Year and Employee Engagement. “Our hospital’s overall performance has trended strong,” Hundorfean beamed. “There is a huge rehabilitation need in Charleston. We are constantly reminded of the importance of doing our jobs with empathy and compassion – while celebrating the wins along the way. I couldn’t be prouder of our leadership team and caregivers for their continued commitment to helping patients here in Charleston recover from a challenging period in their lives and regain independence.” As the chief executive officer, Hundorfean oversees all of the day-to-day operations, as well as patient care and quality, at the 49-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. He assumed the position on Oct. 11, 2021.
