As they prepare to open their newest location on Johns Island, the team at CORA Physical Therapy anticipates that post-operative recovery and functional-based training will be among many patients’ year-end priorities. Scheduling surgeries at the end of the calendar year is quite common. From an insurance perspective, many patients take advantage of meeting their annual deductibles. Scheduling surgery around the holidays also is a good idea because many people have additional days away from work and paid time off to use or lose before the new year – and they have more time to heal. Making time for post-op follow-ups and physical therapy can significantly improve recovery by allowing patients to focus on their healing. However, recovery at CORA Physical Therapy starts before surgery with pre-surgery work-ups and exercises referred to as “prehab,” where CORA’s therapists look at the patient’s overall range of motion, balance and strength. They get to know their patients’ lifestyles and post-operative goals. By working toward each patient’s recovery and goals before surgery, CORA Physical Therapy ensures better patient outcomes. Common surgeries in the senior population include orthopedic procedures such as total hip, knee and shoulder joint replacements, rotator cuff repairs and fracture repair surgeries for injuries caused by falls. Many of these orthopedic patients experience pain and lack of mobility, impacting their ability to play with or carry their grandchildren, stay active or participate in a beloved sport or hobby. Patients cleared to begin physical therapy undergo CORA Physical Therapy’s thorough post-surgery evaluation in which a therapy plan is designed specifically for them. Treatment usually includes manual therapy, dry needling, pain management and more. With dry needling, a needle is placed into the muscle belly or a restriction point in the muscle to loosen it. Dry needling is done in conjunction with stretching and resistance exercises to improve mobility and strength. “Starting the right exercises promptly aids in full recovery,” said CORA Physical Therapy Johns Island Clinic Manager Dr. Steven Greene, adding that commitment outside of the clinic also is important. “Progress in the more functional-based training typically happens more quickly if patients are engaged in their recovery outside of the clinic.” CORA Physical Therapy takes its patients’ recovery very seriously. For this reason, they treat their patients like family: engaging with them, supporting them through the challenges and remaining involved in their care. In addition to providing the physical and occupational therapy resources they need, CORA Physical Therapy strives to create a fun, healing environment that keeps patients focused on attaining their goals. To further encourage recovery, CORA Physical Therapy does not restrict or limit the number of sessions patients can schedule, accepts both insurance and direct pay and offers virtual consults when necessary. In addition to post-operative therapy, patients enjoy specific support through CORA Physical Therapy’s Titleist Performance Institute Certification for golfers, fall prevention therapies and more.
