Most offices are independently owned and operated. 0822 When your health starts to fail, it could mean the beginning of the end of your independence. This can be a disheartening time, especially when you need to be focusing on maintaining your health. That’s where Comfort Keepers steps in, “elevating the human spirit” and helping people continue living their best lives on their own terms. Comfort Keepers caregivers help with meal preparation, light housework, medication reminders, personal care, transportation, errands and other everyday tasks. They are also trained to provide companionship and conversation throughout the day. “We want a person to be as independent as possible, but we are there for support,” said Katie Gerald with Comfort Keepers in Mount Pleasant. “We work in conjunction with home health care services and hospices.” Comfort Keepers began in 1998 when registered nurse Kris Butler saw a patient need that wasn’t being met. Many home care patients still needed assistance with non-medical issues, but, as a nurse, she could only tend to their medical, or skilled care, needs. This didn’t stop them from asking for small things like assisting with the laundry, a ride to the doctor’s office or just helping solve a puzzle. Most of all, Butler noted that they valued her companionship. This led to her forming Comfort Keepers. The name refers to the company’s mission, which is to keep clients living comfortably at home. It is an alternative to expensive nursing homes and senior facilities. The services Comfort Keepers provides are based on the patient’s discharge plan. The goal isn’t to take over for a patient but to provide help where it is needed and a friendly face. Because Comfort Keepers’ services are not medical, no medical referral is needed to get started. “After a home visit, we can start services within 24 to 72 hours,” Gerald said, pointing out that the one-to-three-day time period is needed to match up the right caregiver to the client. Comfort Keepers Mount Pleasant also provides senior care assistance in North Charleston, Sullivan’s Island and other nearby South Carolina communities.
