I was a senior in high school when my dentist, who was also a family friend, made his pitch for dentistry one day when I was in for a routine cleaning. He pointed out all the wonderful advantages of this career, and that advice really stuck with me. My grandparents were also dentists, so that element just added something kind of cool to the whole idea of pursuing dentistry. Throughout college, I changed my mind what seemed like a thousand times, but I kept coming back to the original idea of going to dental school. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the VCU School of Dentistry, and everything fell in place after that. How do you navigate challenges? For me, the key to navigating challenges is not to rush the process if at all possible. Usually, our gut is already telling us what to do, but for various reasons it can be hard to take the action you want to take. The key is not to be overly reactive and to give yourself space to sit with a challenge rather than try to fix it that instant. With a little time and reflection and talking through the problem with close confidants, you can usually arrive at solutions that you’ll feel good about, even if it is difficult. As a child, did you think you’d be where you are today professionally? Yes, actually. I owe that to my parents. It was never a question of if I was going to college but which one. It was a matter of what post-graduate degree I would pursue, not if I would. I remember my parents telling me from as early as I can remember that I was going to be a rocket scientist. Little did they know that I would be terrible at math and would have zero interest in a career like that. The point is, when you grow up with the mentality that you can do anything and be anything you want to be, it feels almost natural to make the choices that lead you down that path. EXCELLENCE. TRUST.
